Putting the Pieces Together:

How the Steele Center and UMC are working together

to build Diamond Children’s Medical Center

Steele equation

People and Programs: The Steele Center Piece in Diamond Children’s
The Steele Center (through the UA Department of Pediatrics/University Physicians Healthcare) is responsible for filling Diamond Children’s with pediatric specialists and programs that ensure world-class clinical care—the “people and programs.” What’s more, the Steele Center is the only academic facility in Arizona conducting research in pediatric diseases, developing new treatments and making medical discoveries for children.

Diamond Children’s will significantly increase the Steele Center’s ability to recruit the best physicians, pediatric sub-specialists, surgeons and researchers. Why? Because pediatric sub-specialists prefer to work in children’s hospitals. This will enable the Steele Center to expand its clinical programs and create new endowments for research. Our children will receive the best care from the best doctors. And more research will lead to more discoveries to improve children’s heath. To accomplish these goals, the Steele Center has estimated it needs to raise approximately $10 million.

Bricks and Mortar: The UMC Piece in Diamond Children’s
UMC is responsible for raising funds to pay for the physical construction of the building—the “bricks and mortar.” The estimated cost for the construction is $55 million. Don and Joan Diamond made a $15 million naming donation, and UMC needs to raise the remaining $40 million. Private philanthropy will enable UMC to complete construction, acquire the most advanced medical technology, and create a comfortable and healing atmosphere for pediatric patients and their families.
