Horace Steele Endowed Chair

The Horace Steele Endowed Chair was instituted and funded by The Steele Foundation, and is held by the Director of the Steele Center, Dr. Fayez K. Ghishan. This chair provides increased visibility and recognition for the Steele Center and The University of Arizona College of Medicine both locally and nationally.

This chair, named in honor of Horace W. Steele, acknowledges the extraordinary achievement, contribution to children's health, dedicated scholarship and service, and superb teaching and research conducted by Dr. Ghishan. This chair enables Dr. Ghishan to continue his cutting-edge research in pediatric gastroenterology , and attract and retain first-rate investigators.

Dr. Ghishan has made extraordinary contributions to the science and practice of pediatric gastroenterology. He has published more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed literature. He cloned a human intestinal sodium-phosphate transporter gene and has extensively characterized the structure, function and regulation of a variety of other sodum-phosphate transporters.

In 1996, Dr. Ghishan was awarded the NIH MERIT Award, providing 10 consecutive years of federal support from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Ghishan has served the gastroenterology community with extensive commitment to NIH review panels. He is currently on the editorial board of the American Journal of Physiology and was recently selected as an Associate Editor for the seminal text, Physiology of the Gastrointestinal Tract, Fourth Edition.
