The Phoenix Women's Board's mission is to support discovery processes that lead to improved treatments and cures for devastating childhood diseases. This dedicated group of respected Valley women is affectionately known as the PANDA's, which stands for People Acting Now Discover Answers. The founding chairs were Penny Gunning and Robyn DeBell, former Tucsonan and member of the Steele Center Phoenix Advisory Board. Each year the PANDA’s hold a children's fashion show called “Children Helping Children." So far, over $700,000 has been raised for pressing needs at the Steele Center. Funds from the PANDA’s have been used to purchase an AutoGen 2000, a robotic system that extracts and purifies DNA samples for genetic research, and a Virtek ChipWriter, which makes customized slides for microarray genomics research.
