The Steele Foundation

With a leadership gift of $2 million, the Steele Foundation, Inc. provided the impetus for building the research tower, which now houses most of our basic science laboratories.

The Steele Children's Research Center commemorates not only this gift, but more importantly, the man who made it possible. Horace Steele was born in 1896 in Phoenix, Arizona. A self-made man, Mr. Steele never attended college, but went into business for himself after serving his country in World War I. His great insights into the financial and petroleum world allowed him huge success in oil-drilling (Steele Petroleum Company) and trucking (Valley Copperstate). His exceptional work ethic and drive for excellence continue to inspire the researchers who now work at the Steele Children's Research Center.

In 2002, the Steele Foundation, Inc. created the Horace W. Steele Endowed Chair in Pediatric Research which is held by the Steele Center Director. This chair gives the director the ability to provide start-up funding to new researchers, and plan for future growth of the Steele Center. The chair is currently held by Center Director, Fayez Ghishan, MD.
